Out From the Blue

Out From the Blue

Out from the Blue was established in 1995 by Gary Kilworth with a vision to seamlessly integrate contemporary landscape design with high quality construction of concrete swimming pools. OFTB has grown to comprise a team of landscape architects and pool builders who work closely on each project to create highly individual, imaginative and exciting landscape outcomes.

This project, designed by OFTB Landscape Architect Dan Gayfer, consists of a striking pool and outdoor living areas spread over two levels. The lower level, dedicated to entertaining, is deliberately minimal in design so as not to draw attention from the 4m x 1.2m clear acrylic panel that forms an entire side of the pool. A barbeque bench and seat/planter are the only objects designed into the lower area; they are bold yet understated in their design taking on the role of support act to the main event that is the pool.

The acrylic panel faces directly toward the floor-to-ceiling glass bi-fold doors of the open plan kitchen, living and dining room of this newly renovated house making it truly a part of the setting for the client’s everyday life rather than an accessory. The design achieves the ‘wow’ factor in a tasteful, art inspired manner whilst creating a number of functional areas customised to the lifestyle of the family.

The upper level consists of a raised pool lounge, timber decked pool terrace, pool house and bamboo garden. The light and airy bamboo contrasts nicely with the insitu concrete pool lounge which, upon meeting the pool house, wraps upwards becoming a bench seat.

The pool terrace is perfect for sunbathing and relaxing or taking a dip in the spa. Its rustic character complements the more contemporary feel of the pool itself and the home. The pool house, also designed by Dan Gayfer, reflects the clean lines and boldness of the pool and home and its cantilevered roof provides ample shade on exceptionally hot days.

Now one of inner Melbourne’s leading residential landscape architecture studios, OFTB has increasingly seen the methods and materials from other design disciplines such as furniture design, interior design and architecture employed in the design of outdoor spaces to transform predictable gardens into exciting exterior rooms that inspire lifestyle potential.
